THE SITUATION IN SYRIA CALLS FOR AN IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
August 26, 2013
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, views the Syrian crisis as creating antagonism that could promote terrorist attacks around the world. The Congresswoman released the following statement:
“Over a year ago the President expressed his red line as it relates to Syria. That red line included the use of chemical weapons on the Syrian people by the Syrian government. It now appears as if the Syrian government has used chemical weapons. If this is true it now calls for the world’s attention. Any response should include collaboration with other nations and consultation with the United Nations to figure out what weapons have been used. Congress must be engaged and we must be sensitive to the needs of the American people and the Syrian people.
“After more than two years of bloodshed, the crisis in Syria has reached a decisive moment. Syria today is the scene of some of the worst state-sponsored violence since Milosevic’s war crimes in the Balkans. And the bloodshed continues, with no end in sight. We now have a raging war in Syria and an international response is needed immediately.”
