STATEMENT BY CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE

ON KAVANAUGH SENATE VOTE

"Today, a historic vote will be taken that will impact Americans for generations to come. It will affect the very fabric of our country including people from different backgrounds, different faiths, and certainly different needs. This is a weighty decision for the Senate. Supreme Court nominees should be held to the highest standards because the Supreme Court is the court of last resort. I implore Senators not to take this vote lightly, not to view the vote as a partisan issue, and not to achieve a victory for one party over another, but a victory for the Constitution, the rule of law, and the American people. The investigation by the FBI was done under limitations. They did their job pursuant to the very limited instructions that they were given by the White House. In the normal course, the FBI would have continued the investigation until it was completed. This was not allowed to happen".

So here we are today, and my plea is for prayerful, serious deliberation that does not denigrate Mr. Kavanaugh as a human being, but recognizes that this has to be bigger than any individual and based only upon what is good for the American people and what is necessary for the highest court in the land. Dr. Ford is owed understanding and dignity, and her testimony under oath should count.

The Senate, acting in the best interest of the nation, should reject this nomination and demand the President send up a new nominee for the United States Supreme Court
