Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Homeland Security and House Judiciary Committees, released the following statement after the President released is final budget today:

“Today, the White House unveiled President Obama’s FY2017 budget request – setting forward a strong, fiscally responsible plan to strengthen our national security, invest in the future, and expand the opportunities of hard-working American families. The President’s budget will once again draw a stark contrast with the radical special interest agenda that has consistently defined House Republicans’ budget plans.

“Under the President’s plan, America makes bold, forward-looking investments in education, infrastructure and innovation, creating good-paying jobs and growing the paychecks of hard-working families.  We create a strong future of security, prosperity and optimism for all Americans. Under previous Ryan Budgets, Republicans abandon seniors, undermine working families, and ransack our investments in education, infrastructure and innovation – all while protecting special interest loopholes and handing massive giveaways to the wealthy and well-connected.

“Unfortunately, Republicans are sinking to a new low in proving their contempt for President Obama and a budget that meets the needs of America’s hard-working families.   In an insult without precedent in modern Congressional history, the Republican Chairmen of the House and Senate Budget Committees have refused to allow the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to present the President’s budget request. The Republican Chairmen’s condescending tone calls into question Republicans' seriousness about fulfilling their promise to complete a budget process that we know will require compromise and consultation with this same Administration.

“Clearly, Republicans are not interested in hearing about a budget that invests in the future and grows the wages of hard-working Americans.  House Democrats will continue to fight for a fiscally-responsible budget that strengthens the security of our country and expands the opportunities of American families.”
