CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON TAKES TO HOUSE FLOOR TO REMIND THE WORLD THAT 93 DAYS HAVE PASSED SINCE KIDNAPPING OF NIGERIAN SCHOOLGIRLS BY BOKO HARAM AND CALLS FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF VICTIMS RELIEF FUND
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees, released the following statement today after taking to the House floor to remind the world that three months have passed since the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls by the terrorist group Boko Haram on April 16, 2014:
“It has been three months since over 200 innocent Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped by the vile and contemptible terrorist group, Boko Haram, in Chibok. I want those girls and their families to know that we have not forgotten about them. I also want them to know that we will not stop advocating for them until every girl has been safely returned and back in school where they belong.
“According to media reports, the leader of Boko Haram has threatened to ransom or sell the girls into the human trafficking market for about twelve dollars each ($12.00 USD). This outrageous conduct cannot be tolerated or overlooked. Not only is it a violation of the girls’ human rights, it is also contrary to United States policy supporting and promoting equal access to educational and economic opportunity for women and girls.
“As a mother and a grandmother, I embrace the mothers whose daughters are still missing and I will do everything in my power to make sure that they are returned. These girls have been missing from their families for too long. We must Bring Back Our Girls!”
