Press Statement

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Travels Today to Washington, D.C., to Participate in the Congressional United States Capitol Rotunda Arrival Ceremony for Former President George H.W. Bush as he lies in State

Jackson Lee—“Throughout these tributes you will hear of the many times former President George H.W. Bush and the late Barbara Bush touched people’s lives personally.  We all would wonder just how people with so many responsibilities could take time to reach out to young students, neighbors and just plain people.  Elwyn, my husband, and I will always remember the very special package that came wrapped from China to us as a wedding gift from then-ambassador Bush and Mrs. Bush.  George H.W. Bush’s life from the very beginning was, in and of itself, a thousand points of life.  We will dearly miss him.  As the nation mourns him, we say we love you—George H.W. Bush—and we will miss you.”

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, of the 18th Congressional District of Texas, issued this statement on her plans to pay her respects to former President George H.W. Bush:

“The series of tributes coming forth in honor of former President George H.W. Bush, whom we lost on Friday at the age of 94, will undoubtedly speak of the impact he had on people’s lives.  Yet, no recognition of this giant would be complete without mentioning Houston, the home of the Bush family for many decades.  I applaud my beloved hometown of Houston as we honor the 41st President of the United States this evening at 7pm for a citywide ceremony.  However, while I would otherwise attend this event, as a senior member of the United States House of Representatives and of the delegation representing Texas in the United States Congress, I will travel to Washington, D.C., later today and at 5pm, I will participate in an arrival ceremony for the casket carrying the body of our beloved former president, representing part of the congressional district that President George H.W. Bush represented during his service as a member of the House of Representatives.  Then, on Wednesday, I will attend the funeral services for President George H.W. Bush at the National Cathedral, where on behalf of a grateful nation, I will pay my respects on behalf of all in the Eighteenth Congressional District.”
