CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE TO TEAM UP WITH A FOSTER YOUTH FOR THIRD ANNUAL "CONGRESSIONAL FOSTER YOUTH SHADOW DAY" ON MAY 29TH

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth,  announced today that she will pair up with Steven Joshua Shaw from Houston, Texas for the third annual "Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day" on Wednesday, May 29th. They will be joining nearly 70 foster youth and alumni from across the country who are traveling to Washington, DC to shadow members of Congress to get a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the House of Representatives.

“I am pleased to be joined Steven Joshua Shaw today here in Washington, DC. He has a full day of activities scheduled for today. He will be attending two important Hearings today, one in the House Judiciary Committee and one in the House Homeland Security Committee. He will also be shadowing me during my various other meetings while on Capitol Hill today.

"I look forward to welcoming Steven as a part National Foster Care Month. These young people remind us that foster youth far too often experience traumatic incidences of abuse and neglect and are separated from their homes and siblings. Yet, even in the face of these challenges, the resiliency of foster youth remains strong.

“In addition to these activities, Steven will attend a Ways and Means subcommittee where psychologist, television personality and author Dr. Phil will testify about ensuring that foster youth receive proper health care, and they will join cast members from the ABC Family television show ‘The Fosters’ in educating members of Congress about the importance of investing in the foster care system. Also, Steven will attend briefings at the White House to talk to administration officials about his experiences of living in the foster care system.

“The foster youth will be joined during their visit to Capitol Hill by staff from the Casey Family Programs, FosterClub, the National Foster Care Institute and FosterMore. I am pleased to have Steven join me today on Capitol Hill and look forward to working with him in the future.”
