Jackson Lee: “Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith loved his family and his country and gave his life to keep them safe. He is a hero.”

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in response to the announcement that Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, 26, succumbed to wounds suffered during shooting rampage in last week’s shooting rampage in Chattanooga, Tennessee, that claimed the lives of four United States Marines:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, and the people of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and persons everywhere shocked and horrified by the senseless attack last Thursday morning.

“There is no place in a civilized society for such senseless acts of violence. But there is every reason for us to redoubling our commitment to protect and fortify soft targets and to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security so that it has the resources and personnel to secure the homeland and protect the safety of our people.”
