Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on Veterans Day 2018

Jackson Lee—“It is our charge to show our care as President Lincoln asked of us over 150 years ago.  Let us take the solemnity that Veterans Day 2018 affords to repurpose ourselves to President Lincoln’s charge and do all we can to help these heroes, in recognition of their service to country over self.”

Houston, TX - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, and the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released this statement commemorating Veterans Day 2018:

“This weekend marks Veterans Day, our annual commemoration and holiday to honor those who wore our uniform in service to our nation.  This year’s commemoration is especially auspicious as it marks the centennial since the conclusion of World War I.  Since that time, hundreds of thousands of men and women have fought and died for the values our nation holds so dear.

“But Americans know that the charge to care for our nation’s veterans predates the Great War.  After all, it was Abraham Lincoln, who by then was presiding over a fractured country and who, during his Second Inaugural Address, reminded the country that the time had come to ‘bind the nation’s wounds, and care for him who shall borne the battle, and for his widow and for his orphan.’

“Here in Houston, we are fortunate to have great numbers of veterans among us.  Harris County is home to the largest population of veterans living in Texas.  It is our shared responsibility and commitment to ensure those who come home return to the lives they paused so they could serve.  For those who do not return from service, it is our charge to show our care as President Lincoln asked of us over 150 years ago.  Let us take the solemnity that Veterans Day 2018 affords to repurpose ourselves to President Lincoln’s charge and do all we can to help these heroes, in recognition of their service to country over self.”
