Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on Today’s Announcement of a Drug Bust at a Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona

Jackson Lee: “Today’s announcement is important not just because it stopped the flow of illegal drugs, but because it confirms what experts have long maintained—that illicit drugs enter our borders through legal ports of entry, and not through the desert where the President would like his border wall built.”

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget issued this statement following today’s announcement of a drug arrest at a port of entry in Nogales, Arizona:

“Earlier today, Customs and Border Protection Officers patrolling a port of entry in Nogales, Arizona, conducted the largest drug bust of fentanyl in the history of the United States.  I commend the hard work of our federal law enforcement, many of whom just worked for five weeks without pay because of the Trump Shutdown.

“Today’s announcement also underscores a critical issue in the debate about a border wall the president promised during his campaign for the office, and a wall that the President repeatedly indicated Mexico would pay for.  The President has repeatedly stated that the country’s drug epidemic is enabled, in part, by a porous southern border, which can only be ameliorated by a southern border wall.  The President has repeated this falsehood, even in the face of compelling evidence from his own administration contradicting him on this critical point.

“Today’s announcement is important not just because it stopped the flow of illegal drugs, but because it confirms what experts have long maintained—that illicit drugs enter our borders through legal ports of entry, and not through the desert where the President would like his border wall built.  It is critical that, as legislators work to prevent another Trump Shutdown, all should keep in mind today’s announcement and remember that a wall is not effective and that to secure our border, we must invest in personnel, resources and other proven tactics which will secure our border and keep our country safe.”
