Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on the Introduction of the FAMILY Act

Jackson Lee—“I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of this meaningful legislation, which is long overdue.  Passing the FAMILY Act is a commonsense way to bring a greater level of security and peace of mind to hardworking Americans eager to help out family when the need arises, but may feel unable to do so because of the obligations of their professional responsibilities.  Paid family leave should be the law of our land.  I commend introduction of this bill, am proud to be an original co-sponsor of this legislation and look forward to working towards its final passage.”

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement on the introduction of the FAMILY Act:

“I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the FAMILY Act, and I applaud its reintroduction in the 116th Congress.  As has been documented for too long and experienced by too many, people are working harder for less take home pay, which in turn makes it harder for families to invest in their future.  And, for many family leave is not an option—a mere 17 percent of the workforce has paid family leave through their employers, and less than 40 percent has personal medical leave through an employer-provided disability program. When people have to forgo pay or lose a job when a serious medical or caregiving need arises, they often jeopardize their ability to afford even the most basic necessities. This hurts workers, their families and the businesses that suffer from increased turnover.

“This is why I am proud to support the FAMILY Act.  This bill addresses the need for a national paid leave that will allow people to receive a portion of their pay when the demands of family necessitate leave from work.  Permitting this would unquestionably result in significant benefits for their families, business and our economy.  If enacted into law, this bill would establish a national paid leave insurance program; provide eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of partial income to address their own serious health condition, including pregnancy or childbirth; to deal with the serious health condition of a parent, spouse, domestic partner or child; to care for a new child; and/or specific military caregiving and leave purposes; and its wage replacement rate builds on lessons from state paid leave programs in California, New Jersey and Rhode Island to help ensure that caregiving time is affordable for lower-wage workers.

“The time for this meaningful legislation is long overdue.  Passing the FAMILY Act is a commonsense way to bring a greater level of security and peace of mind to individuals eager to help out family when the need arises, but may feel unable to do so because of the obligations of their professional responsibilities.  Paid family leave should be the law of our land.  I commend introduction of this bill, am proud to be an original co-sponsor of this legislation and look forward to working towards its final passage.”
