Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on the Fourth Annual Houston Sun African American History Month Parade and Symposium

Jackson Lee—"I have long maintained that our strength comes from our diversity, and this credo is one of many celebrated in this citywide parade. I would like to commend the organizers of this parade, the Houston Sun and Doris Ellis, for their steadfast commitment to the ideals of this parade, and their dedication and tenacity in ensuring that this event is one enjoyed, annually, by the community we call home."

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement on the eve of the Houston Sun's fourth annual African American History Month Parade and Symposium:

"It is a distinct pleasure to congratulate the organizers of the 4th Annual African American History Month Parade and Symposium. February is a special month as we take a moment to recognize and honor the contributions of African Americans to the vibrancy, richness and diversity of the nation we all love. Indeed, there are fewer cities better suited to host this parade than Houston, the fourth largest city in the nation, and home to one of the most diverse populations in the country.

"Our strength comes from our diversity, and this credo is one of many celebrated in this citywide parade. I would like to commend the organizers of this parade, the Houston Sun and Doris Ellis, for their steadfast commitment to the ideals of this parade, and their dedication and tenacity in ensuring that this event is one enjoyed, annually, by the community we call home.

"I also commend the organizers for the second half of the program—a symposium at Texas Southern University at the School of Public Affairs named for two of my predecessors in my role as Representative for the Eighteenth District of Texas—Mickey Leland, and my mentor Barbara Jordan. I am pleased that this event will occur again this year, and a new cross-section of Houstonians are exposed to the worthy contributions of African Americans to our nation, and the service of Mickey Leland and Barbara Jordan to the city we all know and love, and call home."

Congresswoman Jackson Lee is a Democrat from Texas's 18th Congressional District. She is a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget.
