Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on the Disappearance of Jamal Khashoogi

Jackson Lee: “I call on the United States Congress to conduct a thorough oversight investigation of this matter to determine whether all policies and procedures were employed in order to minimize the risk of harm to this legal permanent resident.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, issued this statement on the disappearance of Jamal Khashoogi:

“On October 2, 2018, Jamal Khashoogi, a legal resident of the United States of America and a columnist for the Washington Post, entered the Consulate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul, Turkey, and never reemerged.  Within short order, the international consensus, bolstered by intelligence sources, concluded that Mr. Khashoogi, a Saudi National who often criticized the Saudi Regime, was murdered and dismembered inside the Saudi Consulate.

“In the two weeks that have elapsed since this incident, the President of the United States has done nothing in response except parrot the cover-up story propagated by the Saudi Monarchy that the Saudis had no involvement in Mr. Khashoogi’s disappearance and likely murder.  The President has shown no appreciable interest in the safety of this American legal resident, or what happened to him after he entered the consulate.

“This incident represents a stark departure from the bipartisan tradition of protecting citizens and permanent residents of the United States from kidnapping, torture, murder or other harm when traveling abroad.

“I call on the United States Congress to conduct a thorough oversight investigation of this matter to determine whether all policies and procedures were employed in order to minimize the risk of harm to this legal permanent resident.”
