Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on the Cost of Living Adjustment for Social Security Benefits for 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement on the announcement by the Social Security Administration of a cost of living adjustment for recipients of social security:

"I am pleased to learn that the Social Security Act has yielded a cost-of-living-adjustment of 2.8%, beginning December 2018. This increase in funds, while modest, will help seniors navigate the increasing costs of living in a nation led by the GOP in Congress and the current occupant of the White House. While today's announcement is welcome news for today's seniors it is not enough. In the 116th Congress, instead of cutting Medicaid and Medicare, as Republicans have sought to do, Congress should strengthen the social safety net to help our seniors, including enacting the Social Security Dividend Act, legislation I will reintroduce, which, in the absence of a cost of living adjustment, would yield a $250 increase in Social Security benefits."

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is a Democrat from Texas's 18th Congressional District. She is a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and is a Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.
