Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2018

Jackson Lee: "Unfortunately with each day that passes, we lose to time another member of the Greatest Generation. This week, the nation paused and said farewell to a remarkable member of that era, our 41st president of the United States. As we remember him and the entire Bush Family, let us also remember and keep in our hearts all who fought and died in service of freedom and liberty, and especially those whom we lost today 77 years ago, and who fought in World War II, and who forever will be known as the greatest generation."

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 2018:

"Today marks the 77th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. On December 7, 1941, Japanese military executed a surprise attack on our Naval bases. The next day, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared the day of the attack as one which will live in infamy. The attack precipitated our entry into World War II.

"The five years which would follow set the table for the second half of the 20th century. Due to the valiant and heroic efforts of our nation's fighting forces, together with our allies, the United States would lead the Allied Forces to victory, establish itself as a hegemonic power, and safeguard liberty for the liberal western order for all the days to come. With this power came great responsibility and the days since World War II have seen an America which has underwritten the global democratic order for over seven decades.

"The fighting forces of that time are often referred to as the Greatest Generation. Unfortunately with each day that passes, we lose to time another member of the Greatest Generation. This week, the nation paused and said farewell to a remarkable member of that era, our 41st president of the United States. As we remember him and the entire Bush Family in our hearts, let us also remember and keep in our hearts all who fought and died in service of freedom and liberty, and especially those whom we lost today 77 years ago, and who fought in World War II, and who forever will be known as the greatest generation."
