Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement Following the Report of the Central Intelligence Agency on the Murder of Jamal Khashoggi

Jackson Lee—“Members of Congress in both Chambers and on both sides of the aisle must demand accountability about what transpired in the final moments of an American national’s life.  Moreover, pursuant to the Magnitsky Act, the Congress must initiate sanctions so that immediate action may be taken to respond to this horrendous crime.”

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, and the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued this statement following a report issued by the C.I.A. indicating that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia directed the murder of U.S. permanent resident Jamal Khashoggi:

“The report from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post and a United States permanent resident, was directed by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is troubling for many reasons.  Notably, the assessment by the CIA directly contradicts the official statement from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabiathat the murder was not premeditated.  Indeed the CIA’s assessment, which is given with high confidence, is based on many pieces of evidence, including review of an audio recording of the killing, examining calls made in the moments after the killing, and examining other pieces of forensic evidence.  The CIA’s assessment indicates that Mr. Khashoggi was lured to the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul by the brother of the Crown Prince, and murdered shortly thereafter.

“This is a serious, outrageous act.  Members of Congress in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle must demand accountability about what transpired in the final moments of an American national’s life.  Moreover, pursuant to the MagnitskyAct, the Congress must initiate sanctions so that immediate action may be taken to respond to this horrendous crime.”
