Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement Following the Indictment of Roger Stone

Jackson Lee: “There has been much reported about the contents of the indictment returned by the Grand Jury, notably, whether the president directed an aide to coordinate with Roger Stone about this conspiracy.  But overlooked is a small notation on the cover page of the indictment, which reveals it is connected to a related case: the indictment of 12 members of the Russian military intelligence, with whom Stone coordinated to commit his crimes.  The inference is unmistakable—the indictments returned are related to the nefarious activity of Russian military intelligence to sabotage the 2016 presidential election.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget issued this statement following the indictment of the President’s long-time political aide and “dirty-trickster” Roger Stone:

“This morning, in an early morning raid at his Florida home, the president’s longest serving political advisor was arrested, following a seven-count federal indictment alleging obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury—i.e, lying to Congress.  This is now the sixth associate of the Trump Campaign to either be indicted, convicted, or who has pleaded guilty as part of the Special Counsel’s investigation.  Roger Stone, the President’s self-described “dirty trickster,” will soon face the bar of justice for his role in subverting our democracy.  Of course, by now, Stone’s participation is notorious: working with Wikileaks, the Russian-backed non-state actor, Stone coordinated the surreptitious and selective dissemination of emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton, in order to influence the 2016 election.

“This is yet another dot connected in the Special Counsel’s investigation into Russian interference into the 2016 election and whether that crime was aided and abetted by associates of the Trump Campaign.  There has been much reported about the contents of the indictment returned by the Grand Jury, notably, whether the president directed an aide to coordinate with Roger Stone about this conspiracy.  But overlooked is a small notation on the cover page of the indictment, which reveals it is connected to a related case: the indictment of 12 members of the Russian military intelligence, with whom Stone coordinated to commit his crimes.  The inference is unmistakable—the indictments returned are related to the nefarious activity of Russian military intelligence to sabotage the 2016 presidential election.

“Today’s developments give added impetus for Congress to act on H.R. 197, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, legislation which I have cosponsored.  This bill would permit any special counsel to challenge his or her termination in federal court, during the pendency of which the investigation would be stayed.  It incorporates substantial parts of my legislation from the 115th Congress, which was supported by an overwhelming majority of the Democratic Caucus.  I am heartened to know that with this new Democratic majority, this bill will be carefully considered, fully debated, and passed by the House with a substantial majority.”
