Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement following Reports that the President’s former personal Lawyer has indefinitely postponed testimony to the Committee on Oversight & Government Reform

Jackson Lee—“The president’s social media abuse of Michael Cohen is a blatant attempt to intimidate Cohen from sharing his account of being the President’s fixer for over a year.  Federal law enforcement should consider whether the president’s haranguing of this witness amounts to a violation of the law.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget released this statement following reports that the President’s personal lawyer has indefinitely postponed his scheduled testimony before the Oversight & Government Reform:

“Today’s news that Michael Cohen has indefinitely postponed his testimony to the House Committee on Oversight is troubling.  Yet, even more troubling than this news is the reporting that Cohen is postponing his testimony out of concerns for safety for his family, notably his wife and her father.  Undoubtedly, Cohen is responding to the unprecedented attacks made by the President on Michael Cohen, first following the latter’s decision to cooperate with the Special Counsel, and then on news that Cohen was seeking to publicly testify to Congress.  The president’s social media abuse of Michael Cohen is a blatant attempt to intimidate Cohen from sharing his account of being the President’s fixer for over a year.  Federal law enforcement should consider whether the president’s haranguing of this witness amounts to a violation of the law.

“In the meanwhile, it is time for the Congress of the United States to exercise its constitutional duty to conduct oversight over a presidency sorely in need of it.  I commend the Chairs of the Judiciary and Intelligence for their decision to investigate this matter.  Nonetheless I urge both houses of Congress to act on H.R. 197, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, legislation which I have cosponsored.  This bill would permit any special counsel to challenge his or her termination in federal court, during the pendency of which the investigation would be stayed.  It incorporates substantial parts of my legislation from the 115th Congress, which was supported by an overwhelming majority of the Democratic Caucus.  I am heartened to know that with this new Democratic majority, this bill will be carefully considered, fully debated, and passed by the House with a substantial majority.”
