Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Statement Following Plans to Deploy 15,000 Troops to the Southern Border

Jackson Lee: “What is known is that this represents yet another example of the President’s see-if-it-sticks strategy, where he begins each day in the waning days of this midterm election by propagating a hateful or unconstitutional or untenable policy—regardless of effectiveness or practicality—designed solely to distract voters from a nearly two-year record of ineptitude, corruption and ineffective leadership.  Democrats are offering a better deal, For the People, which puts people first.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement following comments by the President that he may deploy military troops to the southern border:

“Over the course of the past many days and weeks, the president has ratcheted up the rhetoric about the state of our readiness at the Southern border.  He has flailed about a caravan of migrants from Central America which, by most accounts, are a thousand miles away and at least many months away from our borders.  He has pledged to deploy troops to guard the border—the numbers have increased from 2,000 to 5,200 to 15,000 troops.  This is without specification as to mission or cost.  This move is in addition to a pledge to build tent cities to house migrants while their claims for asylum are pending.

“This posture represents yet another diversion to the absurd, with the President misusing his powers as Commander in Chief in order to effectuate his political ends.  Moreover, it is not entirely clear what the deployment of these troops--in numbers so large that they resemble a unit in a theater of war—can accomplish within the bounds of existing federal strictures, like posse comitatus

“What is known is that this represents yet another example of the President’s see-if-it-sticks strategy, where he begins each day in the waning days of this midterm election by propagating a hateful or unconstitutional or untenable policy—regardless of effectiveness or practicality—designed solely to distract voters from a nearly two-year record of ineptitude, corruption and ineffective leadership.  Democrats are offering a better deal, For the People, which put the people first.  It means lowering health care costs and prescription drug prices; it means increases in pay through strong economic growth by rebuilding America; and, it means rooting out corruption and ensuring that Washington works for the people.”
