Press Statement

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Joins the American Red Cross of Greater Houston and the Wounded Warriors Project to Distribute Blankets to Homeless Veterans

Jackson Lee—“In Houston today and this week, temperatures are expected to approach freezing levels, with wind chills expected to venture below that level.  This presents a unique public safety hazard to our city’s homeless population, especially veterans, and puts a unique pressure on the shelters and facilities designed to combat and address this situation.  In the face of this bitter cold, I am pleased to help ease the burden on Houston and the impact felt by those without ready, regular access to housing and shelter.”

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, and the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued this statement as her office distributes blankets to homeless veterans as temperatures in Houston plummet to at or below freezing levels:

“As Autumn turns to winter, Americans throughout our nation are beginning the transition to shorter days and colder weather.  While many of us are preparing for the change in seasons with our normal, annual traditions, the drop in temperatures can be dangerous for many individuals, including the young, the elderly, and homeless populations.  In Houston today and this week, temperatures are expected to approach freezing levels, with wind chills expected to venture below that level.  This presents a unique public safety hazard to our city’s homeless population, especially veterans, and puts a unique pressure on the shelters and facilities designed to combat and address this situation.  In the face of this bitter cold, I am pleased to help ease the burden on Houston and the impact felt by those without ready, regular access to housing and shelter.  Which is why I am pleased to join American Red Cross of Greater Houston and the Wounded Warriors Project to help distribute blankets to homeless veterans in various locations across downtown Houston, including:

  • Midtown Terrace Suites – 4620 Main Street, Houston, TX;
  • US Route 59 Bridge;
  • Between St. Johns and Pierce Street;
  • Intersection of Richmond Avenue and Wheeler Street; and
  • Houston Convention Center

The distribution will begin at the Midtown Terrace Suites at 1pm CST, and proceed to other locations as scheduled and outlined above.  For additional information, please contact Edward Howard at (713) 805-2131.”
