THE QADDAFI FAMILY STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF THE LIBYAN PEOPLE NOW

March 17, 2011

HOUSTON – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security and senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement regarding the atrocities in Libya:

“With blood running in the streets of Libya and with the leader of the country with obvious disdain for his people and disregard for the responsibilities of sovereign nations, I call on the United States to urgently engage the United Nations so that a unified voice can arise denouncing the violence in Libya, and so that a strategy can be developed that will result in the removal of the Qaddafi government. I applaud President Obama for issuing sanctions and freezing the assets of the Qaddafi regime and his family, but we cannot take our eye off of the situation in Libya. The Qaddafi regime continues to slaughter innocent people and impose vicious tyranny on the people of Libya. We cannot stand by and do nothing, and America cannot do this alone. We must have unified voices from NATO, the United Nations, the African Union, and other world groups to stop the slaughter and violence against the people of Libya.”

“As a Member of Congress, I am calling on my colleagues to join me in calling attention to the plight of the people of Libya and their fight for freedom, justice, and deliverance from Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi,” commented Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. “I stand with the people of Libya fighting for peace and freedom and Libyan-Americans, and I demand an end to the mass murder by the Qaddafi forces that are going on today. I further call upon the return to nonviolence and the immediate acceptance by Col. Qaddafi that he must step down now and leave Libya now! The Libyan people deserve a nonviolent democratic nation in which they can thrive, prosper, and provide for their families and children, and I am proud to stand with Libyan-Americans who are nonviolently protesting on behalf of their native land.”
