Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Congratulates Four Students from the Eighteenth Congressional District on their Selection as Recipients of Scholarships from the United States Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth

Jackson Lee: “I congratulate Keiddrick Fizer of Chinquapin College Preparatory School, Carlee Marquez of St. John's School, Tiffany Rubalcava of YES Prep North Forest, and Janiece Stelly-Hernandez of Houston Academy for International Studies on their selection for this honor.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, issued this statement:

“I am proud that four high school students in the 18th Congressional District of Texas have been selected for highly-competitive scholarships from the United States Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth.  Participants selected for this scholarship live overseas in language immersion programs to acquire skills that are critical to U.S. national security.  Participants in the Youth Ambassador Program focus on civic education, community service and leadership development projects during exchanges to central and South American regions.

“Funded through the Educational and Cultural Exchanges congressional program, which I am proud to have supported throughout my congressional advocacy, these high school exchange programs annually prepare over 1,000 young Americans to succeed in the 21st century global economy—by developing their foreign language skills, increasing their cross-cultural understanding, strengthening their leadership and fostering new academic insights and ambitions.”

“I congratulate Keiddrick Fizer of Chinquapin College Preparatory School, Carlee Marquez of St. John's School, Tiffany Rubalcava of YES Prep North Forest, and Janiece Stelly-Hernandez of Houston Academy for International Studies on their selection for this honor. I also thank the U.S. Department of State for recognizing the excellence of the students of Houston and I am proud to have strongly advocated and supported the authorization legislation that created this grant program and the appropriations bill that made this funding possible.”
