Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Congratulates AT&T’s Aspire Initiative and Project Grad Houston on its Two-Year $1,000,000 Grant

Jackson Lee – “Project Grad is an important component in achieving student excellence in the Houston.  It does this through ensuring on-time graduation of high school students, but also the successful enrollment and matriculation into college certificate and degree programs.  Through its recognition of Project GRAD, AT&T is demonstrating its longstanding social corporate responsibility, and doing this by investing in the next generation of Houston’s leaders.”

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security, Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and a Senior Member of the House Budget Committee, issued this statement following her successful efforts help secure critical federal grant dollars for Project GRAD Houston:

“I am proud to congratulate AT&T on its grant award of a two-year $1,000,000 grant, made possible by federal grant appropriations through my advocacy in the United States House of Representatives, to its Project GRAD Houston and the Aspire Initiative. Project GRAD is an important component in achieving student excellence in the Houston.  It does this through ensuring on-time graduation of high school students, but also the successful enrollment and matriculation into college certificate and degree programs.  Through its recognition of Project GRAD, AT&T is demonstrating its longstanding social corporate responsibility, and doing this by investing in the next generation of Houston’s leaders.

“AT&T’s collaboration with Project GRAD is now in its tenth year and helped thousands and thousands of students achieve high school success.  This includes ensuring that Project GRAD works collaboratively with schools and area colleges to reach thousands of students considered at risk. This is vital as studies show that at-risk students are more likely to divert from their goals of high school graduation and post-secondary education.  To wit, 85% of students served by Project GRAD Houston are from economically disadvantaged households—75% are Hispanic and 22% are African American.

“I am honored to have played a role in securing these funds.  As is well known, access to a quality education is the most potent way to break through perceived societal barriers.  Indeed, AT&T’s two-year $1,000,000 grant will assist students in underserved areas achieve their fullest potential.  I congratulate AT&T, its Aspire Initiative and Project GRAD for its investment in our future and commend those participating to better their lives for pursuing a better future for themselves and the communities in which they will thrive.”
