Jackson Lee—"As a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security—which has oversight over Customs and Border Patrol and the entire Department of Homeland Security—I am especially concerned about whether and to what extent this individual, if he is found to have committed these heinous crimes, misused the rights and responsibilities attendant to his official position as a supervisory agent of the Customs and Border Patrol as a tool to commit these crimes."
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations released the following statement following the arrest of a suspected serial murderer, a supervisory agent at the United States Customs and Border Patrol:
"I am shocked by the gruesome murders committed in and around Laredo, Texas, of these four individuals, and the injuries sustained to a fifth person. I appreciate the hard work of law enforcement in Webb County, including the Webb County Sheriff Department and the Webb County District Attorney in naming and apprehending a suspect, who has subsequently been identified as a supervisory agent with the United States Customs and Border Patrol.
"Many questions about these crimes remain to be answered and to be certain, the criminal justice system in Webb County will work its will. As a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security—which has oversight over Customs and Border Patrol and the entire Department of Homeland Security—I am especially concerned about whether and to what extent this individual, if he is found to have committed these heinous crimes, misused the rights and responsibilities attendant to his official position as a supervisory agent of the Customs and Border Patrol as a tool to commit these crimes. I encourage the Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security to hold hearings on this matter and recommend that the Office of Inspector General within the Department of Homeland Security conduct an investigation into this matter."
