Press Statement

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Commends the National Football League on its support of the Rodchenkov Anti-Doping act of 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement following the NFL’s announcement of its support of the Rodchenkov Anti-Doping Act of 2019:

I commend the National Football League on its decision to endorse the Rodchenkov Anti-Doping Act of 2019.  In so doing, the NFL joins other major sports organizations, like Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and the United States Olympic Committee in supporting the legislation.   I am proud to be the original sponsor of this legislation, originally introduced in the 115th Congress, which would criminalize international doping fraud conspiracies.  “If enacted into law, the Rodchenkov Anti-Doping Act will: establish criminal penalties for participating in a scheme in commerce to influence a major international sport competition through prohibited substances or methods; provide restitution to victims of such conspiracies; protect whistleblowers from retaliation; and establish coordination and sharing of information with the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

I urge others who care about the integrity of sport to join this legislation and send a message to international actors, especially Russia, that compromising competition furthers no end, and only exacerbates the problem of doping fraud.
