Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, and the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, announced today that the National Eye Institute has awarded grants to fund the Vision Research Program at the University of Houston:

"The University of Houston is a world-class research institution, which boasts a premier College of Optometry. The College of Optometry has a robust research program with more than 30 renowned faculty, conducting research supported by grant funds to prevent, or slow the progression of visual loss using a variety of approaches. It has been paramount in conducting research for health issues that affect the eyes of women and children. I am proud to announce that the College of Optometry has been awarded $382,500 in funds for which I advocated. This crucial grant project, funded through 2023, will research the role of hyaluronan in the cornea specifically focusing on the regulation of limbal stem cell fate and lymphangiogenesis. It is appropriate that this grant be awarded and recognized during August which is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month.
