Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Commends the award of $8,974,135 in new Federal Assistance for Texas Schools

Jackson Lee–“Harvey left over 20,000 school children homeless, and the Houston Independent School District was left with rebuilding many schools, a process which will take many years.  This is why the announcement by the United States Department of Education of federal assistance dollars, for which I advocated, is such an important step in the city and the region’s long march to recovery.”

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security, Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement following a grant award to benefit Texas schools damaged after Hurricane Harvey:

“When Harvey struck my hometown, my fellow Houstonians awoke to a day that would bring them Hurricane Harvey, a monstrous weather event that twice made landfall and which dropped 30 trillion gallons of water and caused $200 billion dollars of damage.  The severity of the damage cannot be overstated.  Over 100 people died either directly or indirectly because of collateral consequences due to the storm; thousands needed rescue; tens of thousands of homes were damaged and so many, many more lives were affected.  The storm left over 20,000 school children homeless, and the Houston Independent School District was left with rebuilding at least four schools, a process which will take many years.

“Which is why the announcement by the United States Department of Education of federal assistance dollars, for which I advocated, is such an important step in the city and region’s long march to recovery.  The state of our schools has long been a concern of mine.  Across the nation, teachers are being asked to do more with less, and do this in the face of increasing demands on their time and distractions with which they have to contend.  Moreover, they do this with paychecks that barely make ends meet.  Unfortunately, in Houston, these realities are compounded by serious challenges facing our schools, which of course are exacerbated by the disruption caused by Hurricane Harvey and the departure of key educational personnel.  This grant award is an appreciable step towards fixing our schools.”
