WASHINGTON —Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has been awarded a total of $1.825 million in grants from the Continuum of Care Renewal (CoCR) Program. This grant was awarded to four recipients from the 18th Congressional District of Texas – Career and Recovery Resources, Inc., Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc. – for providing permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons as well as services including job training, health care, mental health counselling, substance abuse treatment and child care.
“These substantial grants will help in reducing the over 8,700 homeless persons by providing training opportunities, access to essential recourses and offer shelter to over 3,500 people on a regular basis. An important fact of the homeless population in Houston’s Harris and Fort Bend Counties is that 22% of the homeless population represents families with children” said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
With the help of HUD’s CoCR grant program that has awarded – Career and Recovery Resources, Inc., Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc. - more homeless support services and training can be provided, lowering the homeless population and help those who are at risk of becoming homeless or chronically homeless.
Nationally, more than 1.7 million of the homeless population are families with children. Predominantly caused by tragic life occurrences like the loss of loved ones, job loss, domestic violence, divorce and family disputes; the four organizations awarded the CoCR grant work to better the lives of those who are unfortunate.
“I congratulate Career and Recovery Resources, Inc., Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc on being awarded this grant and know that it will be used in hopes of aiding the miss fortuned and providing the proper resources for the homeless peoples to start over again.”
