Congresswoman Jackson Lee: “Continuum of Care Renewal Grants awarded by HUD to Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc., and Career and Recovery Resources, Inc. will sustain needed programs and services to reduce homelessness”

WASHINGTON —Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX18) announced today that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $1.825 million in grants from the Continuum of Care Renewal (CoCR) grants to four recipients from the 18th Congressional District of Texas – Career and Recovery Resources, Inc., Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc. The grant funding will enable the organizations to continue providing permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons as well as job training, health care, mental health counselling, substance abuse treatment, and child care services.

“These substantial grants will provide much needed help to the recipient organizations which selflessly serve over 8,700 homeless persons by providing training opportunities and by offering shelter to more than 3,500 people on a regular basis. Since 22% of the homeless population in Harris County represents families with children, these Continuum of Care grants will make a real difference in the lives of children,” said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Nationally, there are more than 1.7 million families with children have become homeless primarily due to tragic life occurrences like the death or joblessness of a primary breadwinner, divorce, and domestic violence. In Houston, organizations like Career and Recovery Resources, Inc., Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc. serve a crucial need in holding these families together and helping them get back on their feet.

“I congratulate Career and Recovery Resources, Inc., Covenant House Texas, Santa Maria Hostel, Inc., and Stop Turning Entering Prison Inc. on being selected to receive these critically important grants which will help them continue their vital work in helping to hold homeless families and children and assist them in rebuilding their lives. I am proud to have supported the authorization programs that made this grant funding possible, said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
