CONGRESSWOMAN JACKSON LEE STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO DENIAL BY U.S. DISTRICT COURT OF NFISD MOTION FOR TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Judiciary and Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement in response to the order issued today by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas denying NFISD’s motion for a temporary restraining order against the Texas Education Agency:
“I applaud the North Forest Independent School District and its attorneys for their forceful and effective advocacy on behalf of NFISD educators, students, and parents. I am disappointed that U.S. District Court Judge Hittner did not grant the motion for a temporary restraining order.
“Although I believe NFISD’s position had substantial merit, the court’s denial of injunctive relief is another direct, immediate, but foreseeable consequence of the Supreme Court’s misguided decision declaring Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act to be unconstitutional. It is imperative that Congress hold the hearings and pass the legislation needed to repair the damage caused by the Supreme Court’s erroneous ruling.”
