Press Statement

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Condemns Trump Administration’s Irresponsible Decision to Put Children in Jeopardy of being Abused and Neglected by Waiving Screening Procedures for Personnel Supervising Minors in Tornillo, Texas and Calls for Congressional Investigations

Jackson Lee—“This malfeasance is yet another example of the shocking mismanagement, cruelty and indifference that this president and his administration have shown towards immigrants and refugees.  This shameful conduct makes our country a global pariah, and makes a mockery of America’s promise to be the last best hope of the world.”

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, and the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations issued this statement following reports that children separated at the border were supervised by personnel whose background screening was waived by the Trump Administration:

“From the moment he started his campaign for president, Donald Trump has denigrated immigrants.  He cast them as rapists, murderers and, animals.  Upon taking office, he implemented a Muslim ban, preventing many innocent individuals from entering our borders.  Then, as the nation watched in horror, this administration implemented a cruel policy of child separation, whereby children migrating to the United States were separated from the parent or guardian who accompanied them.  The country was rightly outraged.  Many protested, from one corner of the country to the other, and through the halls of Congress.  Despite promises to end the policy permanently, recent reports suggest that the Trump Administration has secretly restarted the effort.

“Now comes word that migrant teens who are coming to our country seeking a better life, are being detained at our southern border and housed in tent cities in the Texas desert.  Were this not enough, and according to the Associated Press and Pro Publica, the Trump Administration has waived certain security screening protocols to ensure that the health, safety and well-being of the very children these personnel employees did not pose a threat to those they were charged to protect.  Specifically, the administration waived the child abuse and neglect screening, placing in jeopardy the safety of thousands of teenagers and imperiling the very individuals the screening procedures were designed to protect.

“This malfeasance is yet another example of the shocking mismanagement, cruelty and indifference that this president and his administration have shown towards immigrants and refugees.  This shameful conduct makes our country a global pariah, and makes a mockery of America’s promise to be the last best hope of the world.”
