This community-wide celebration is also an opportunity to inform and highlight the importance of Juneteenth.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, senior member of the House Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold access to mifepristone, a widely used abortion pill. “Today, in the case of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, the United States Supreme Court unanimously overturned a federal appeals court ruling that would have barred mail-order prescriptions for mifepristone, a prescription drug used for more than half of abortions in the United States.

Today we mourn the loss of Reverend James M. Lawson, a leader in the civil rights movement and a spiritual trailblazer. Reverend Lawson was an influential leader in the civil rights movement who believed in creating change through nonviolent protests.

My adult life has been defined by my faith in God, my love for humanity and my commitment to public service. As a member of Congress, I've been honored to be one of the leaders in the fight for justice and equality for all; especially the disadvantaged and the dispossessed. Today, my fight is more personal, but I will approach it with the same faith and the same courage. My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
