Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Mourns the Death of

Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers of the U.S. Marshal Service

Who Was Killed in the Line of Duty Apprehending a Fugitive From Justice

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations, released the following statement in response to the tragic death of U.S. Marshal Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Deputy Commander Patrick Carothers, and the members of the U.S. Marshal Service and Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force. The death of a U.S. Marshal is a tragedy and another reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers who risk their lives to keep our communities safe.

“Under the leadership of Deputy Commander Carothers, the Southeast Regional Taskforce attempted to apprehend a wanted fugitive when there was an exchange of fire, resulting in the death of Deputy Commander Carothers and the fugitive.

“Deputy Commander Carothers served the citizens of this nation honorably during his brilliant 26-year long career, which was tragically cut short. I join the nation in mourning his loss, cherishing his memory, and working to reduce gun violence in America.”
