CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE ANNOUNCES UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON AWARDED $329,581 GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE FOR PROSTATE CANCER RESEARCH

January 22, 2015

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee announced today that the University of Houston has been awarded a research grant in the amount of $329,581 from the National Cancer Institute to support the University's outstanding Prostate Cancer research program:

"I am pleased to announce that the National Cancer Institute has selected the University of Houston to receive this prominent and generous grant. According to the American Cancer Society, about 27,540 Americans die each year from prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, affecting about 15% of men throughout their lifetimes but disproportionately affecting African American men, who are more than twice as likely to die from the disease. The funding provided by this grant will enable the University of Houston to expand its prostate cancer research programs, help attract new students to the field, enhance the learning experience for current students and most importantly, help to end this horrible disease.

"As a strong supporter of the National Cancer Institute and several of their programs, I am proud to have advocated for the legislation that authorized the funding that made this grant possible.

"I thank the National Cancer Institute for recognizing the contribution to public health of the University's prostate cancer research, Daniel Edward Frigo, the principal investigator of the project, and his talented team of researchers."
