Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a Member of the Out of Iraq Caucus, traveled to Iraq to receive first hand operational assessments of Operation Iraqi Freedom & Operation Enduring Freedom. She joins Rep. Brad Ellsworth, Rep. Carol Shea Porter, and Rep. Michael Conaway on this monumental Congressional Delegation.
“Everyday, the men and women of our Armed Forces commence on a risky journey. I praise those individuals who currently continue to accept the challenges posed by fighting for our liberty in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. These individuals represent America’s finest and it is in honor of their service that we should devote ourselves to bringing an end to this war,” stated Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will meet with General David Patraeus and the United States Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, to receive a briefing about the current situation on the ground in Iraq.
“There are currently more than 1,500,000 active and reserve component members of the Armed Forces serving the United States in support and defense of the values and freedom that all Americans cherish,” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee. “The debt we owe our Nation’s armed services cannot be quantified, the respect and admiration felt by all Americans hardly expressed. With an estimated 4000 fatalities due to the Iraq war, it is imperative that we show the men and women who sacrificed their lives each day for our protection, just how much their courage means to us.”
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has been opposed to the war since its conception and has written legislation calling for the withdrawal of our Armed Forced out of Iraq her legislation H.R. 930, ‘Military Success in Iraq and Diplomatic Surge for National and Political Reconciliation in Iraq Act of 2007.’ This legislation recognizes the extraordinary performance of the Armed Forces in achieving the military objectives of the United States in Iraq. It calls for our military men and women of the diplomatic surge to bring about national and political reconciliation and provides for an orderly redeployment out of the region.
“As we remember and honor the sacrifices of our forces and their families, we must renew our national promise to fulfill our obligations to those who have worn this nation’s uniform. The service that these brave individuals provided is priceless and will never go unrecognized,” concluded Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
